The Premier League has provided an explanation for why Evanilson’s second-half goal for Bournemouth was allowed to stand in their 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Arsenal had taken the lead through Declan Rice in the first half, but Bournemouth fought back.
Dean Huijsen equalized in the 67th minute, and Evanilson netted the winner just eight minutes later.
However, Evanilson’s goal sparked controversy, as replays appeared to show the ball making contact with his elbow before he scored from close range.
After a thorough video assistant referee review, the goal was upheld. Many Arsenal fans and football followers expressed their doubts about the decision.
The Premier League addressed the situation in a statement on its official X handle, stating, “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with no conclusive evidence that Evanilson handled the ball before scoring.”
Football pundit and former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp also backed the decision during his appearance on Sky Sports.
“Is there enough evidence to overturn that? I would say absolutely not,” Redknapp said.
The outcome proved to be a significant setback for Arsenal, who are engaged in a tight title race and could not afford to drop points at home.
