Newcastle United managed to snatch a dramatic point at the Amex Stadium after Alexander Isak buried a late penalty in their 1-1 Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, an outcome that keeps their Champions League hopes alive.
Brighton had looked set to claim all three points following a fine first-half goal by winger Yankuba Minteh.
But with just minutes left on the clock, Isak coolly converted from the spot in the 89th minute, sending Bart Verbruggen the wrong way for his 23rd league goal of the campaign.
The penalty was awarded when Yasin Ayari bizarrely raised his arm to block Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.
Newcastle now sit fourth in the standings with 63 points and three matches to go. They hold a slender three-point advantage over Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, both of whom still have a game in hand. Brighton, meanwhile, remain in 10th position.
Minteh had earlier haunted his former club by opening the scoring in the 28th minute.
Cutting inside onto his left foot, he rifled a fierce shot through a crowded box into the far corner, capitalizing on Brighton’s first real chance of the game.
