The United States has issued a warning that it may withdraw from its efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that Washington would not continue to “waste its time and resource” if both countries were unwilling to pursue peace.
The Trump administration is nearing its 100th day in office, yet no significant breakthrough has been achieved in resolving the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
During the campaign, the Republicans had pledged to bring an end to the war within the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency.
“It needs to happen soon,” Rubio said during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press. “We cannot continue to dedicate time and resources to this effort if it’s not going to come to fruition.”
On Sunday, President Trump also spoke to journalists, expressing the belief that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was prepared to relinquish Crimea.
When asked whether he thought Zelenskyy was willing to “give up” the peninsula seized by Russia in 2014, Trump responded, “Oh, I think so.”
Trump’s remark directly contradicts Zelenskyy’s consistent stance on the matter.
Meanwhile, fresh Russian drone and airstrike attacks across Ukraine early Sunday left at least four people dead.
In the Donetsk region’s city of Kostyantynivka, regional prosecutors reported that three people were killed and four others injured following airstrikes.
Additionally, Governor Serhii Lysak confirmed that another casualty and a 14-year-old girl wounded were recorded after a drone attack on Pavlohrad in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
