Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has expressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s health and ability to govern Nigeria.
Sowore took to his official X handle to share his thoughts, stating, “Tinubu will skip #UNGA; after the Chinese trip and London medicals, this man can’t move any more! @officialABAT is unfit and unwell. Nigeria is not going to make progress with these types. Our people were on the ground in New York to confront Tinubu and his crew.”
This reaction came after the Nigerian presidency announced that President Tinubu would not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to UNGA.
According to the Special Adviser Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, the president wants to focus on domestic issues, particularly addressing the challenges posed by recent devastating flooding.
The presidency’s statement read, “President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York this year. The President has thus directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation. President Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after his trip to China and the United Kingdom, wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding.”
During the UNGA, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings.
The high-level General Debate will take place from September 24 to 28, 2024, with the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
