The National Economic Council has given a one-week deadline to three states and the Federal Capital Territory to submit their reports on the proposed establishment of State Police.
This directive is part of the NEC’s broader effort to compile a comprehensive report from all 36 states and the FCT regarding the creation of State Police forces.
In February 2024, President Bola Tinubu, along with state governors, endorsed the idea of state policing as a solution to Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
As part of the initiative, states were instructed to submit their reports to the NEC for review and subsequent action, according to Politics Nigeria.
The NEC has warned that any state failing to meet the deadline will be subject to binding decisions on the matter.
