Fulham staged a dramatic comeback to defeat bottom-placed Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, securing vital points in their bid for European football after Ryan Sessegnon netted a 92nd-minute winner.
Southampton, already relegated, struck first in the 14th minute when Jack Stephens found the net with a glancing header from a set-piece.
Fulham pressed for an equaliser and finally broke through in the 72nd minute when Emile Smith Rowe’s effort, helped by a deflection off Jan Bednarek, leveled the score.
With the momentum firmly in their favour, Fulham kept the pressure on the Saints. Adama Traore swung a cross into the box, allowing Sessegnon to stoop low and guide a header into the bottom corner.
The win propelled Fulham into eighth place with 51 points, while Southampton, with four matches remaining, are desperate to avoid matching the unwanted record of Derby County’s 11-point finish in the 2007/08 season.
Elsewhere, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy missed a penalty during a week he announced he would be leaving the club at the season’s end, bringing an end to a 13-year stint.
The Foxes, struggling heavily, suffered their 17th defeat in their last 19 Premier League outings.
