Liverpool have been crowned 2024/25 English Premier League champions following a resounding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
The triumph marks Liverpool’s first league title since 2020 and only their second in the last 35 years. With this success, the Reds have now equaled Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles.
In contrast to five years ago, when Covid-19 restrictions prevented fans from celebrating in person, Anfield was packed with over 60,000 supporters who created an electrifying atmosphere. Before the match, tens of thousands of fans had gathered outside the stadium, lighting flares and waving flags emblazoned with the words, “Liverpool 20-time Champions.”
The game began with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Tottenham struck first when Dominic Solanke headed home from a James Maddison corner in the 12th minute. However, Liverpool responded swiftly. Luis Diaz tapped in a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai just four minutes later. Although the offside flag was initially raised, VAR reviewed the play and awarded the goal.
Liverpool continued to pile on the pressure. Alexis Mac Allister gave the Reds the lead in the 24th minute with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. Cody Gakpo extended the advantage before halftime, smashing the ball into the bottom corner after Tottenham failed to clear their lines effectively.
In the second half, Liverpool’s top scorer Mohamed Salah added another goal. After collecting a pass from Szoboszlai, Salah cut inside and blasted a shot into the bottom corner. In a joyous moment, Salah celebrated by taking a selfie with a fan’s phone in front of the famous Kop stand.
As Liverpool’s dominance grew, chants of “We’re going to win the league” filled Anfield, with fans fully embracing the party atmosphere. The Reds’ fifth goal came when Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie accidentally poked the ball into his own net.
At the sound of the final whistle, Liverpool’s iconic anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” echoed throughout the stadium as fans sang passionately and waved their scarves in celebration.
On the pitch, goalkeeper Alisson Becker and manager Arne Slot shared an emotional embrace as the players celebrated their historic achievement.
Liverpool now sit on 82 points, a commanding 15 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, with only four matches remaining. Despite a strong challenge, Arsenal have been unable to match Liverpool’s remarkable consistency this season.
Tottenham, on the other hand, remain 16th in the Premier League table following their 19th defeat of the season, increasing the pressure on their manager Ange Postecoglou.
The 2024/25 season had begun with Manchester City as favourites to claim a fifth consecutive title. However, a dip in their form opened the door for others. Arsenal attempted to capitalise but were hampered by too many drawn matches, while Liverpool, under the guidance of their new manager, maintained their strength and focus.
