Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the latest verdict of the supreme court affirmed Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, as the All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate for Yobe north.
It would be recalled that Machina won the Party’s primary election without opposition in May 2022, whereas Lawan competed and lost the party’s presidential ticket to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Following this, Machina, had made a public outcry that Lawan and other figures are trying to take away the party’s ticket from him.
In the midst of the uproar, the APC submitted Lawan’s name to the Independent Electoral Commission as its candidate, forcing the befuddled electoral body to leave the senatorial district candidacy unfilled when it announced the full list of candidates across the country.
In turn, Machina sued both his party and the INEC, requesting that the court recognize him the legitimate senatorial candidate.
A federal high court in Damaturu, the Yobe capital, pronounced him the winner in September 2022, directing both the APC and INEC to recognize Machina as the candidate.
In addition, an appellate court in Abuja confirmed Machina as the legitimate candidate of the APC in the Yobe North senatorial district.
However in a latest development, in a judgement delivered on Monday, the apex court, has pronounced Lawan as the candidate of the APC in the Senatorial District.
The development has continued to generate several reactions from Nigerians who are questioning the credibility of the Judiciary even as the 2023 general elections is just a few weeks away.
@Pastor Who tweeted, “Machina won the senatorial ticket unopposed. Ahmed Lawan lost his cabal-induced presidential bid and decided to hijack Machina’s ticket. Both the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal affirmed Machina’s victory. How did the Supreme Court get so compromised?
“This is barbaric!”.
@Hirofunshi, replied, “A situation where someone will lose cases at the two lower Courts and still take it to the Supreme court is evil. Supreme court should be where dissenting judgments of the lower Courts are finally settled. There is need for a judicial reform…this is not good for democracy.”
@KawuGarba, tweeted,”Ahmed Lawan didn’t even participate in the primaries. He was then fighting for the presidential ticket. What a judgment! Our judicial system is compromised.”
@Sdbello, tweeted, “Truly this judgment is heartbreaking, how and why is this happening Kai!!!. The Supreme Court has lost my respect.”
@Hon_Asadiq, tweeted, “The judiciary is the cancer of democracy in Nigeria!
Ahmad lawan has been in the parliament since 1999 and still he can’t live without power, what a greed person.”
@Adamilola9, tweeted, “Funny Nigerians are celebrating Ahmed Lawan victory at the Supreme Court when they knew the man didn’t participate in the party primary, can we now agreed that our Judicial system is compromised!”
@CAPT_Vincent, tweeted, “Machina that duely contested election and won still lost to Ahmed Lawan that didn’t even participate in the process at the Supreme Court; Nigeria’s judicial system is a sham.”
