Manchester United striker, Joshua Zirkzee, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury that could potentially rule him out for the remainder of the season.
The 23-year-old Dutch international was forced off during the second half of Sunday’s loss to Newcastle and has since undergone medical assessments to evaluate the damage.
United boss, Ruben Amorim is expected to give an update on Zirkzee’s condition during his press conference on Wednesday, ahead of their crucial Europa League showdown with Lyon at Old Trafford.
However, several sources have told BBC Sport that the injury appears serious enough to cast doubt on whether Zirkzee will feature again this season.
The timing of the setback is particularly frustrating for Amorim as United prepare for Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon, with the score delicately balanced at 2-2.
Zirkzee, who arrived from Bologna last summer, has netted seven times for United so far this campaign. He was on the scoresheet in the first leg against Lyon and started in the match at St. James’ Park.
Manchester United still have six Premier League fixtures to play, with their final league outing set for 25 May against Aston Villa.
Should the Red Devils progress to the Europa League final, they’ll contest the title in Bilbao, Spain, on 21 May.
