Manchester United icon, Rio Ferdinand, has urged the Red Devils to make Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, their top transfer priority, identifying him as the perfect solution to the club’s attacking issues under new manager Ruben Amorim.
With Manchester United actively seeking reinforcements for their forward line ahead of the summer transfer window, Ferdinand’s endorsement of Osimhen comes at a pivotal moment.
While the club has reportedly shown interest in Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, valued at around £40 million should Ipswich suffer relegation, Ferdinand insists that Osimhen is the man for the job.
Currently on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray from Napoli, Osimhen has been in explosive form, netting 28 goals and contributing five assists in just 32 appearances during the 2024–25 campaign.
His consistent performances have underlined his status as one of Europe’s elite forwards, attracting the attention of top clubs.
Ferdinand’s admiration for Osimhen is rooted in the striker’s pedigree and leadership qualities.
The former United captain emphasized Osimhen’s potential to influence not just games but also younger players within the squad.
In a video posted on social media, Ferdinand said, “We need someone who knows how to score and can show these young strikers at Manchester United how to do it. If I’m Man United, I’m making it happen.”
“I want someone who knows their way around the football pitch at the elite level and knows how to score at the elite level consistently. Osimhen’s done that. I want that here and now. Yes, Osimhen hasn’t played in the Premier League, but I don’t care. I think he scores wherever he goes.”
Still, bringing the Nigerian star to Old Trafford may not be straightforward. Napoli reportedly values the 26-year-old at over £70 million, substantially more than the asking price for Delap.
However, Ferdinand believes that the rewards of signing a player of Osimhen’s caliber far outweigh the cost.
Victor Osimhen has carved an impressive legacy since arriving at Napoli. Over four seasons, he has played 133 matches for the Serie A side, scoring 76 goals and clinching the Serie A Golden Boot during their historic 2022/23 title-winning campaign, the club’s first in over three decades.
His latest exploits at Galatasaray have only boosted his reputation, with 28 goals in a single season underscoring his lethal finishing and adaptability.
Ferdinand’s backing has now reignited speculation around a blockbuster move to Manchester United, as the Red Devils weigh the value of experience and proven quality in their search for a prolific striker.
