Former United States President Donald Trump, in his bid to regain the White House, addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, promising to resolve ongoing global crises and restore American influence worldwide.
He said, “We will restore peace, stability and harmony throughout the world… Under our leadership, the United States will be respected again. No nation will question our power, no enemy will doubt our might, and our borders will be secure.”
Trump painted a bleak picture of the world under his successor, President Joe Biden, warning that the planet is “teetering on the edge of World War III.” He blamed Biden for various international conflicts, including those with roots predating his presidency, saying:
“There is an international crisis the likes of which the world has seldom been part of… war is now raging in Europe, in the Middle East, a growing spectre of conflict hangs over Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and all of Asia.”
Trump vowed to end these crises, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, saying:
“I will end every single international crisis that the current administration has created, including the horrible war with Russia and Ukraine.”
He also demanded the release of American hostages held abroad, threatening:
“The entire world, I tell you this: we want our hostages back and they better be back before I assume office or you will be paying a very big price.”
Additionally, Trump pledged to build a version of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system for the United States, and claimed to have a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying:
“I get along with him, he’d like to see me back too. I think he misses me if you want to know.”
Trump’s speech emphasized his goal of restoring American prestige and power on the world stage. His claims and promises have drawn scrutiny, with some critics questioning their feasibility and accuracy.
