On the occasion of his first anniversary as Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu signed into law a bill that mandates a return to the nation’s old national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee.”
The move followed a legislative process initiated by the House of Representatives. On Tuesday of the previous week, the House passed the bill, which was sponsored by Julius Ihonvbare, the leader of the House.
The proposal for the bill began with its second reading on Thursday, May 23. Subsequently, it was deliberated by the committee of the whole, approved, and passed during its third reading.
This legislative action marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s national symbols. The bill is set to proceed to the Senate for concurrence before it is fully enacted into law.
More to come.
