Prof. Banji Akintoye has resigned as the head of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, the umbrella organization for the Yoruba self-determination movement.
It was learned that Akintoye’s resignation was the result of reported faction conflict inside the self-determination organization.
However, the group’s general secretary, Tunde Amusat, stated in a statement on Thursday announcing Akintoye’s decision that the former Yoruba Nation leader has passed the reins of leadership to his former deputy, Prof. Wale Adeniran.
Age and a weakened bodily system, according to Amusat, were the reasons Akintoye’s leadership was passed to Adeniran.
Amusat maintained that Adeniran was elected as the new leader of the organization on Amusat maintained that Adeniran was elected as the new leader of the organization on December 17, 2022, at the global congress of Ilana Omo Oodua, which accepted Akintoye’s resignation.
He further stated that the proposed constitutional modification endorsing Adeniran’s position as Chairman would be put on the agenda for the upcoming world congress before the year’s end for registered members to ratify.
The statement read: “Akintoye extolled the principled virtues of Adeniran, commending him for his consistent patience against all forms of blackmail, slanders and defamatory affirmations which had been unleashed against him in the past by those he (Akintoye) described as “disgruntled elements”.
“Adeniran is a retired Assistant Professor of African Studies and the pioneer Commissioner for Education in Osun State. He hails from Ile-Ife.”
