Candidates for the role of Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives in the upcoming 10th Assembly met with the speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Mr. Gbajabiamila stated in a tweet on his account on Friday that they are all men he has worked with for many years.
“Yesterday I had meetings with candidates running for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria in the upcoming 10th Assembly. I’ve known and worked with all nine candidates for many years, and I do not doubt that they will succeed in carrying on and expanding the legacy of the 9th Assembly.
Some of the men at the meeting include Deputy Speaker Idris Wase (APC, Plateau), Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau), Muktar Betara (APC, Borno), Ben Kalu (APC, Abia), Sada Soli (APC, Katsina), Tunji Olawuyi (APC, Kwara) and Abubakar Makki (APC, Jigawa).
Others include Aminu Jaji (APC, Zamfara) and Tajudeen Abbas (APC, Kaduna)
The candidates have started their campaigns while they wait for the All Progressives Congress to decide which zone the seat would be assigned to.
Although the ruling party convened a meeting in March to examine the office’s zoning, no decision was taken.
At the March meeting at the State House, Mr. Gbajabiamila told reporters that the decision will be made following the governorship elections. On March 18, governorship elections were held.
The ruling party would probably decide on zoning after the results of the supplemental elections on April 15.
Just 325 seats’ results were announced following the 25 February national assembly elections. The lower room has 360 chairs.
When democracy was restored in 1999, nine speakers addressed the parliament. The 10th speaker will be whoever takes office in June to launch the 10th National Assembly.
