The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, received a high-level delegation from the Republic of Korea on Saturday, October 21, 2023.
The delegation was led by the Special Envoy and Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Won Hee-ryong, who was accompanied by the Ambassador of Korea, Kim Young-Chae.
Taking to his official X handle on Saturday, he shared pictures from the meeting.
Akume wrote, “Honored to welcome the Republic of Korea Delegation led by Special Envoy H.E. Mr. Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It was a privilege to discuss bilateral ties and explore avenues for stronger cooperation in various sectors between Nigeria and Korea.
“Accompanying the Minister on this trip was the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, H.E. Mr. Kim Young-Chae. Our discussions focused on fostering deeper relations between our nations, with a shared commitment to progress and mutual understanding.”
The visit was aimed at enhancing the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Korea, which have been established since 1980. The two sides discussed various areas of cooperation, such as land and infrastructure development, transport and mobility innovation, digital governance, trade and investment, and cultural exchange.
Akume expressed his appreciation for the visit and the support that Korea has provided to Nigeria in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. He said that Nigeria valued its friendship with Korea and looked forward to expanding the scope and depth of their partnership.
Won praised Nigeria’s economic potential and its role as a regional leader in Africa. He said that Korea was committed to sharing its development experience and expertise with Nigeria and supporting its vision of sustainable growth. He also invited Nigeria to participate in the International Transport Forum Summit 2023, which will be hosted by Korea in May.
The two sides agreed to hold the 6th Session of the Nigeria-Korea Joint Commission in Seoul in October 2023 to review the progress of their cooperation and explore new opportunities. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and expressed their willingness to work together for peace and stability.
The visit was seen as a positive step towards consolidating the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Korea, which have been mutually beneficial and rewarding for both countries.
