The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed July 12, 2025, as the date for the state’s local council elections.
The announcement was made on Friday by LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Tope Ojo, during a press briefing in Lagos.
According to Ojo, the election will cover 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats across the state. He also revealed that if there is any need for a re-run in any area, it will be conducted on July 19.
Lagos State is administratively divided into 20 constitutionally recognised Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas, bringing the total number of areas involved in the election to 57. These councils are further divided into 376 political wards.
Ojo said the choice of July 12 was strategic, aimed at preventing any leadership vacuum as the tenure of the current council administration nears its end.
“With the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent local government administration fast approaching, LASIEC has intensified preparations to ensure a seamless and transparent election process,” he stated.
The commission has already flagged off the electoral process with the formal release of the Notice of Election, marking the official commencement of pre-election activities.
Political parties intending to participate in the election are required to obtain nomination forms from the LASIEC headquarters, where further guidance will be provided.
Ojo also disclosed that a crucial meeting with all registered political parties will be held on Tuesday to brief them on the procedures and expectations ahead of the election.
“The Election Guidelines will be published on April 17,” he announced.
He added that political parties and candidates can commence their campaigns and rallies from April 18, with the campaign window closing on July 9, just three days before the election.
The submission window for Nomination Forms for substituted and only candidate submissions has been scheduled for June 18 to June 25.
In a separate statement, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), gave assurances that the electoral body is committed to providing a fair and impartial platform for all parties and candidates.
She said, “The commission remains committed to conducting a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election.”
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also urged all political parties, their aspirants, and supporters to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable and guidelines to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections.
