The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it successfully intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, amid escalating United States military operations targeting the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
Following the launch, sirens sounded across several locations in Israel, according to the Israeli Defense Forces.
According to Reuters, in March, U.S. President, Donald Trump, ordered extensive airstrikes against the Houthis, aiming to degrade their military strength and discourage further attacks on vessels navigating the Red Sea.
These recent offensives mark the most substantial American military campaign in the Middle East since Trump assumed office in January.
The Houthis have claimed that their actions, including missile strikes on Israel and assaults on Red Sea maritime routes are acts of solidarity with Palestinians, in response to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
The group has further vowed to widen its scope of attacks inside Israel, citing the renewed military offensive in Gaza that began two months ago.
Additionally, the Houthis have pledged to maintain their assaults on maritime routes, despite the intensified American air campaign.
This follows what has been described as the “biggest and deadliest” military engagement by the U.S. in Yemen under President Trump’s leadership.
