The Federal Government has sought the cooperation of the governors of Cross River, Ebonyi, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa States for the construction of a superhighway linking these states with the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
This initiative, part of the Renewed Hope Legacy Infrastructure Project, aims to boost economic development across the region.
Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, made this call during a meeting with stakeholders and the governors of the five states on Saturday in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He emphasized that the superhighway project is more than just road construction; it is a significant investment intended to catalyze Nigeria’s economic revival.
Umahi highlighted other key legacy projects under the current administration, including the Lagos-Ondo-Edo-Delta-Bayelsa-Rivers-Akwa Ibom-Cross Rivers (700km) route, the Sokoto-Kebbi-Niger-Kwara-Oyo-Ogun-Badagry route, and the Cross Rivers-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Apo route. These projects are expected to bring substantial benefits, especially to the states they traverse.
”I request that you buy into it and support Mr. President who still has about more years to deliver these projects. We believe that with the remaining years these three legacy projects shall be delivered,” Umahi stated.
The Minister assured that all the road projects would be constructed with reinforced concrete, designed to last up to 50 years before requiring maintenance. He added, “Each of these sections are going to be on reinforced concrete. Each of these sections has six lanes. It also has a train track. We are also using solar streetlights.”
Umahi also pointed out the extensive benefits of these infrastructure projects, noting, “The benefits of these three legacy projects cannot be overemphasized. It is going to be done in concrete. Sokoto-Badagry has 53 dams on that section.”
Moreover, the Federal Executive Council has directed that ongoing federal government projects across the country, which have remained uncompleted for a long period, should be identified and prioritized for completion.
Governors of the affected states and other stakeholders present at the meeting praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating the Renewed Hope legacy infrastructure projects. Governor Abdullahi Sule, who also serves as the Chairman of the North-Central Governor’s Forum, expressed gratitude to the FG for embarking on these iconic projects that had been delayed for decades.
Governor Sule assured that the governors of the affected states are committed to providing full cooperation for the successful completion of the superhighway project.
