The All Progressives Congress has told the Labour Party presidential candidate in the just-concluded presidential election, Peter Obi, to be prepared to explain his party won over 90% of votes in the SouthEast region.
Premium Politics reports that the ruling party’s comment comes hours after Obi, in a press conference on Thursday, stressed that he won the election and would be heading to court to ensure he reclaims “his stolen mandate,” a phrase which the People’s Democratic Party’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, has also echoed.
This publication reported that the hotly contested three-horse race presidential poll was won by the APC flagbearer, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who polled 8,794,726 votes.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Atiku came second with 6,984,520 votes while Obi came third with 6,101,533 votes, despite the three candidates winning 24 states apiece.
The former governor of Anambra State, who spoke at a global news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, alleged that the election was not free and fair.
Obi said, “I will show Nigerians that the Labour party won the election.,” as he reacted to the INEC’s declaration of APC’s Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential elections.
Reacting in a statement signed by the Director, Media & Publicity to the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, the party welcomed Obi’s decision to challenge Tinubu’s victory but disagreed with his claims that he won the poll.
Ononuga said that Obi’s “decision of Mr Obi to seek redress in court as an aggrieved party if he is convinced of the evidence of electoral fraud he will present it before the tribunal as alleged.
“Going to court is part of the electoral process and it is the most decent, statesmanlike and civilised course of action to take. We salute the decision. It is surely better than calling supporters to the streets and instigating social unrest.”
