The authorities at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, have sanctioned 34 students from the institution’s College of Medicine for their involvement in various examination malpractices during the 2022/2023 academic session.
The penalties range from two to four semesters of rustication.
This disciplinary action was announced in a university bulletin dated April 14, 2025, and jointly signed by F.O. Omoigui, Deputy Registrar (Senate) for the Acting Registrar, and Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, Principal Assistant Registrar (Information and Public Relations).
According to the bulletin, the affected students are in their 300- and 500-levels, and the decision was based on recommendations from the Mobile Students Disciplinary Committee (College of Medicine), set up specifically to investigate the infractions.
The university stated, “This is to inform you that the university management, after due consideration of the reports submitted by the Mobile Disciplinary Committee (College of Medicine), has approved the penalties recommended for the offenses committed by the following students during the 2022/2023 session.”
Students from several departments within the College of Medicine were involved, including Hematology, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology, Physiology, Medicine and Surgery, Chemical Pathology, and FMLS.
In total, 21 students received a two-semester rustication while 13 were suspended for four semesters.
Of these, 20 students in 500-level were affected — 12 suspended for two semesters and eight for four semesters.
Additionally, the university clarified that not all students investigated were found guilty. Six were cleared of any wrongdoing, two were cautioned to maintain good conduct, and one received a formal warning.
At the 400-level, 10 students were sanctioned — four for four semesters, six for two semesters — while two were exonerated. In the 300-level category, three students were rusticated for two semesters, one for four semesters, and another was cleared.
The offenses ranged from being caught with unauthorized materials during examinations such as HAE 503 and MMB 504, to impersonation during the 401 exam. In some instances, students were found with university answer booklets containing solutions related to the exam questions.
One student, who was only issued a warning, was said to have been caught with a mobile phone in his pocket while stepping out of the exam hall during PTH 503.
For those advised to be on their best behavior, one allegedly refused to submit his exam script when instructed to do so (MMB 401), while another was reportedly unruly in the hall, though no evidence was found on him.
