A bill seeking to amend the Constitution and introduce provisions for diaspora voting has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The legislation, co-sponsored by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Representative Sodeeq Abdullahi, aims to amend the 2022 Electoral Act to grant Nigerians living abroad the right to vote in elections.
The bill initially passed its second reading in July and was subsequently referred to the Committee on Electoral Matters for further review, according to Channels TV.
After scaling its second reading once again on Tuesday, the bill has now been referred to the Constitution Amendment Committee for additional legislative scrutiny and action.
If passed, the bill would pave the way for significant electoral reforms, extending voting rights to the Nigerian diaspora.
