A student of Yaba College of Technology was shot dead on Tuesday in a suspected cult-related attack near the institution’s back gate, shortly after completing his exams.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was confronted by a group of young men who shot him twice at close range before fleeing the scene. The brazen attack has reignited concerns about the increasing menace of cult violence in Lagos State.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that law enforcement authorities had taken swift action.
“On Tuesday at about 3 pm, a distress call was received at Sabo Division that a suspected cultist was allegedly shot dead by a group of suspected rival cult members in the Yaba area,” Hundeyin said.
He revealed that officers responding to the distress call found the student lying in a pool of blood with visible bullet wounds. A search of his pockets led to the recovery of four rounds of live ammunition and charms. The body was later moved to the morgue for autopsy.
Hundeyin also disclosed that seven suspects had been arrested in connection with the killing as investigations continue.
The attack at Yabatech follows a worrying pattern of cult-related killings across Lagos. On Monday, a 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in Oyingbo, Ebute Metta.
In another gruesome incident, two men were found dead along Oladun Road in Idimu on Sunday, with one of them reportedly decapitated in what police suspect was a gang-related attack carried out late Saturday night.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations into these violent incidents are ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to curb the growing threat of cult violence in the state.
