The Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign headquarters in Rivers State has been shut down.
The action, according to the Rivers State PDP presidential campaign council, was taken on the state government’s instructions.
Early on Friday morning, the office, which is situated in GRA Port Harcourt, was blocked off.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State recently signed Executive Order 22, which forbids political parties from setting up campaign offices without government permission in residential zones.
The PDP PCC in Rivers State, however, said that its media team had requested permission from the state government but had not heard back for several weeks.
The group criticized the measure as a result because “act because it rubs off on our fundamental right to free expression of interest.”
It also said: “This egregious move by the Rivers State Government, seen in the prism of politics, tends to militarise our democracy and renders our dear state politically recessive when juxtaposed with other states in the country.”
