Tunde Rahman, media aide to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has explained why the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, called Tinubu on Wednesday.
In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Rahman stated that Blinken called because the US understands the importance of Nigeria among the comity of nations.
According to him, the US recognised Tinubu’s victory in the February 25, 2023 presidential election since the competitive character of the elections signalled a new era in Nigeria’s democracy.
Premium Politics reported that Blinken had pledged stronger ties between the US and Nigeria during a 20-minute telephone call to Tinubu on Tuesday.
Also the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has knocked Blinken for the call.
He also described the conversation between Blinken and Tinubu as “demoralising”.
“I am in disbelief that Secretary Antony Blinken called Tinubu, a contradiction to the publicly stated position of the US on Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
‘’This is inconceivable considering that America, as the bastion of democracy, is well briefed on the sham election of February 25. To give legitimacy to the widely acknowledged fraudulent election in Nigeria can be demoralising to citizens who have hedged their bet on democracy and the sanctity of the ballot,’’ Atiku said on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.
