Labour Party caucus leader in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Ogene, has praised the recent UK general election that saw the Labour Party defeat the ruling Conservative Party.
Ogene, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, sees the UK Labour Party’s victory as a motivating factor for the Nigerian Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Awka on Friday, Ogene commended the UK’s election process, highlighting its transparency, integrity, and efficiency.
He congratulated UK Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on his party’s landslide win, securing 412 seats against the incumbent Conservatives’ 121, according to TheNation.
Ogene noted that the UK election saw a glitch-free process, with 40 million voters participating and results announced promptly.
He emphasized the importance of emulating democratic principles and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The lawmaker urged the Nigerian Labour Party to draw inspiration from their UK counterparts, unite, and prepare to take power in 2027.
He believes the UK Labour Party’s victory demonstrates that positive change is possible when people come together with a unified objective.
“The process in UK was free of glitches, as about 40 million voters took part, polls closed around 10 pm on Thursday and by daybreak the results were out.
“There was no judicial ambush, as immediate transition took place to the admiration of all lovers of democracy and free and fair elections”, he said.
He continued, “If we must practice democracy, we must also love, copy and abide by the transparency and accountability of democratic institutions in nations that allow the rule of law and democratic principles to thrive.
“The British Labour Party’s victory inspires hope and optimism, demonstrating that positive change is possible, when people come together with a unified objective.
“I urge the Nigerian Labour Party to draw inspiration from our British counterparts, close ranks, rally the people, and prepare to take the reins of power in 2027,” he said.
