The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed an immediate investigation into a case of alleged extortion involving some operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
This follows a viral social media post accusing NSCDC personnel of extorting ₦5.2 million from a group of young men travelling from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure, the Ondo State capital.
According to the post, the travellers were allegedly stopped and unlawfully compelled to part with the large sum by the uniformed officers. The claims have sparked outrage online and prompted swift reaction from the Interior Minister, who described the allegations as deeply concerning.
In a statement released by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo condemned any form of misconduct among the nation’s security operatives and pledged that those found culpable would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct from our security agencies,” the minister declared. “We are building a paramilitary that is disciplined and professional and will serve Nigeria and Nigerians with dignity and patriotism.”
Reaffirming his commitment to integrity and justice in security operations, Tunji-Ojo added, “On this case, we will see that justice is upheld and ensure that security personnel serve with forthrightness.”
