Three fishermen were reportedly killed in an early morning raid by suspected Lakurawa bandits on Sanyinna, a community in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Tuesday.
According to local accounts, the victims were ambushed while engaged in their routine fishing activities, marking yet another deadly assault in the region.
The attack came barely 24 hours after similar incidents in Sutti and Takkau villages within the same LGA, where two individuals sustained gunshot wounds.
Confirming the attacks, the Special Assistant on Security to the Tangaza Council Chairman, Garzali Raka, said the bandits also made away with numerous livestock, including camels, cows, goats, and sheep during the earlier raids.
“Our security operatives acted swiftly, trailing the criminals and engaging them in a gunfight. Fortunately, the stolen animals were recovered in Siddi community after a fierce exchange,” Raka stated.
He disclosed that the two residents injured in the Monday attacks are currently receiving medical care at the Tangaza General Hospital.
Raka expressed concern over the escalating violence, particularly attacks being carried out in broad daylight.
He warned that the increasing insecurity is threatening the livelihoods of residents, especially those involved in animal husbandry.
“These criminals are deliberately targeting areas where livestock farming thrives. It’s becoming a disturbing pattern. We need urgent intervention from both the state and federal governments to restore lasting peace,” he added.
The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed the incident.
“Our officers are on the trail of the perpetrators. We are committed to ensuring they are arrested and brought to justice soon,” Rufai assured.
