The Centre for Transparency Advocacy has frowned at the purported plan to purchase vehicles for lawmakers in the country at a value of about 160 million naira each.
The group fears that the purchase of N160 million naira SUV for Nigeria’s 469 lawmakers is an indication that the government is unsympathetic to the plight of the citizens.
Director at Centre for Transparency Advocacy, Faith Nwadishi, said being an issue of government priorities and fiscal responsibility, the first choice of borrowing for conditional cash transfer wasn’t bad but the fact that the country is neck deep in debt is worrisome, according to The Guardian.
She opined that the government is lacking structures and strategies to ensure transparency in managing the borrowed fund.
She stressed that Nigerians are subjected to pain on a daily basis and such humongous spending on vehicles shows how insensitive the government might be.
She added that such spending could fuel distrust of the government by its citizens.
“Buying cars at that humongous sum shows how unsympathetic the government is to the pain the people are subjected to daily and it is quite insensitive.
“On the whole, this further fuels citizens’ distrust of the government’s intentions,” Nwadishi stated.
