In a move to reconfigure the country’s political landscape, Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman (Kano South) has introduced a bill to create a new state, “Tiga State”, carved out from Kano State.
The proposed legislation, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)”, underwent its first reading on the Senate floor on Wednesday.
This development follows recent proposals for the creation of additional states, including Anioma State (from Delta), Orlu State (from Imo), and Etiti State (from Abia), according to Greenbarge Reporters.
The bills aim to address geopolitical imbalance and demands for greater representation and resource control.
The proposed new states have sparked debate on the country’s federal structure and potential implications for governance and resource allocation.
As the bills undergo legislative scrutiny, Nigerians await the outcome of this significant constitutional reform effort.
