Dominic Solanke’s 43rd-minute penalty proved decisive as Tottenham Hotspur edged past Eintracht Frankfurt to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory and book their place in the Europa League semi-finals, a much-needed result that brings relief to manager Ange Postecoglou.
With their European hopes hanging in the balance following a 1-1 draw in the first leg last Thursday, Spurs faced a daunting task at the Deutsche Bank Park.
But they rose to the occasion with one of their most composed and resilient performances under Postecoglou, ensuring his spell in charge continues.
The crucial goal came just before half-time, as Solanke calmly converted from the spot after vice-captains Cristian Romero and James Maddison combined to earn the penalty.
The strike marked Solanke’s first goal in 12 appearances. Despite squandering further chances in the second half, Tottenham displayed grit and determination to preserve their lead and clinch their first Europa League semi-final appearance in over four decades.
Postecoglou, who had confessed earlier in the week that he had “no idea” if he would remain in his role beyond the tie, can now turn his attention to the upcoming semi-final in May, with Spurs still dreaming of ending a 17-year wait for silverware.
