Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has labeled social media as a terrorist organisation, highlighting its role in the spread of misinformation and its potential to incite violence.
Speaking at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Maiduguri, Borno State, the monarch expressed concern over the influence of social media.
He called for a more rigorous approach to social media, urging security agencies to treat it with the same level of seriousness as other national security threats.
“Social media is one terrorist organisation,” he remarked. “Somebody can sit in the comfort of their home and formulate stories and you will consider that it is true.”
The Sultan emphasized that social media should be addressed as a security issue, stating, “Social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media.”
The Sultan also condemned the persistent violence and killings in Plateau and other regions, urging political leaders and security agencies to take swift and decisive action to address the situation.
