AC Milan staged a dramatic second-half turnaround to edge past Genoa 2-1 in Monday’s Serie A clash, thanks to a deflected strike from Rafael Leao and an unfortunate own goal by Morten Frendrup.
The Rossoneri found themselves trailing after Vitinha, having just entered the pitch, connected with a precise cross and slammed it home to give Genoa the lead shortly after the hour mark.
However, Milan responded with urgency. Leao brought the visitors level in the 76th minute, his effort taking a crucial deflection, before Frendrup inadvertently steered the ball into his own net moments later, completing a rapid comeback.
Genoa had dominated the opening half and would have been ahead if not for an inspired performance from Mike Maignan. The Milan goalkeeper pulled off a string of vital saves to keep the score goalless at halftime.
The second half was marred by interruptions due to injuries and heavy rain, which often halted momentum on both sides.
But Milan eventually broke through, showcasing the resilience that has defined their campaign.
The victory continues Milan’s trend of fighting back from behind — they’ve now claimed a league-high 19 points from losing positions this season.
Statistically, Milan created chances worth 1.09 expected goals compared to Genoa’s 0.57. The win marks their fifth in their last eight league outings (D1 L2), equaling the number of victories from their previous 14 Serie A fixtures (D4 L5).
Leao was once again instrumental, extending his impressive away form with five goal contributions, three goals and two assists, in his last six road appearances.
Notably, he joins Christian Pulisic (10 goals, eight assists) and Romelu Lukaku (12 goals, 10 assists) as one of just three players to have recorded at least eight goals and eight assists in Serie A this season.
