The All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State has been embroiled in a long-standing crisis, which began after the 2019 general elections.
In an effort to resolve the issue, Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, a key figure in the party, had collapsed his political structure following a peace deal brokered by the national APC leadership with former Governor Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari.
However, it appears that the peace deal has not yielded the desired results, as Marafa’s faction has now constituted a 21-man committee to reestablish his political group within the Zamfara State APC.
According to a statement issued by the chairman of the group, Alhaji Sirajo Garba Maikatako, the committee has already held its first meeting under his leadership. The statement emphasized that the move is not intended to create a faction within the APC but rather to establish a strong group under Senator Marafa’s leadership, spanning from the polling unit level to the state level.
The committee stated, “The aim is to prevent the hijacking of the party by a few individuals. An open invitation was extended to all well-meaning individuals in Zamfara State to join the group, emphasizing fair treatment for both existing and potential new members.”
The committee also expressed disappointment with the current management of the APC in Zamfara State, stating that internal power struggles have hindered progress and made it difficult to address the pressing issue of insecurity in the state.
It added, “Also, it is lamentable how the party became a tool in the service of individual interests against the peace and stability of the state, with the party only being heard when such interests are questioned.”
