The Senate on Thursday passed a bill that extends the duration of the 2023 supplementary budget from June 30 to December 31, 2024.
This move is significant as it marks the third extension of the budget’s deadline, which was initially set to expire on December 31, 2023, before being extended to March 31, 2024, and then to June 30, 2024.
According to The PUNCH, the lawmakers expedited the bill’s passage by suspending their rules, completing the process in less than 20 minutes. This rapid decision followed a two-hour closed-door session, indicating the urgency and importance of the matter.
The Senate’s decision came just four days before the current deadline and ahead of their scheduled resumption date of July 2, 2024. This preemptive action highlights the legislative body’s commitment to ensuring the continuity of government operations and financial stability.
