The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in Sokoto State, Saidu Umar, against the election of the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu.
The apex court in a judgement delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun on Wednesday, served the judgment on the matter after listening to the argument from the parties involved in the appeal.
It would be recalled that Aliyu was declared the winner of the March 18 Governorship election in Sokoto State, by the Independent National Electoral Commission, after scoring the highest number of votes to defeat his closest river from the PDP.
Consequently, the PDP and its candidate approached an appeal court in Abuja, seeking to reverse the APC candidate’s victory.
They alleged that Aliyu and his deputy, Idris Gobir, were not eligible to contest the governorship poll.
They also alleged that the election was not only marred by irregularities but also not conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
Meanwhile, the court of appeals dismissed their appeal for lacking in merit and affirmed the victory of the PDP candidate.
Not satisfied with the judgement of the appellate court, Umar and the PDP approached the apex court, to upturn the appeal court judgment.
However, the judgement on their appeal has been adjourned for a later date.
