Mohamed Salah has officially brought an end to months of speculation about his future by putting pen to paper on a new contract with Liverpool.
The Egyptian forward has committed to a two-year extension that will see him remain at Anfield until 2027, reaffirming his dedication to the Merseyside giants.
Previously set to depart this summer when his contract expired, Salah had hinted on several occasions that this might be his final campaign in a Liverpool shirt.
However, after prolonged negotiations led by sporting director Richard Hughes and Salah’s representative, Ramy Abbas Issa, an agreement has finally been reached.
Despite reports suggesting the 32-year-old would accept a reduced salary to stay, sources have denied any such compromise, stating that a pay cut was never considered by either side.
“Of course I’m very excited,” Salah said following the announcement. “We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.
“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
Since arriving from Roma in 2017, Salah has become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success, racking up nearly 400 appearances and claiming seven major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
His 2024 campaign has been stellar, notching 32 goals in 45 matches across all competitions, 27 of them in the Premier League.
Salah’s contribution has been vital to Liverpool’s charge for their 20th league title. A memorable brace against Southampton in March elevated him to third place on the club’s all-time goalscoring list.
He is the first among Liverpool’s trio of soon-to-be out-of-contract stars to commit his future to the club, with the statuses of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold yet to be resolved.
Van Dijk, the team captain, has suggested that talks are progressing positively.
Reacting to Salah’s renewal, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot expressed his delight, “I’m happy, of course. He’s shown at this club for so many years now how much value he has for the team and for the club. We’re so happy he’s extended for two more years.
“Relief? For the fans I think so. It’s no surprise to you I knew a bit better how the contract situation went. I knew a bit longer things were heading in the right direction. It is a big compliment to [Liverpool sporting director] Richard Hughes because Mo Salah, as a free agent, can go to any club he wants to.”
Salah’s new deal secures one of Liverpool’s most prized assets as they look to usher in a new era under Slot, with hopes of adding more silverware to their decorated history.
