Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to allow peace to reign in the state.
Fubara made this appeal during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
Governor Fubara defended his decision to conduct the local government elections last Saturday, despite resistance from Wike’s supporters in the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.
Fubara emphasized that he had taken all necessary steps to ensure peace in Rivers State, including making personal appeals to Wike. He stated that he had kept all agreements made with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to maintain peace.
The governor urged Wike to prioritize the well-being of Rivers State citizens and let go of any control he may think he has. Fubara emphasized that his tenure would eventually come to an end, and it was crucial to secure the state’s future.
This development comes amid ongoing tensions in Rivers State following the local government elections. Governor Fubara’s appeal seeks to ease the political rift and promote stability in the region.
“There is nothing I have not done on this earth for peace to reign. I can tell you the number of times I have knelt down to beg that let’s allow this issue to go. I have done everything,” Fubara said.
On what he would tell Wike if they meet, Fubara said: “I’ll tell him (Wike) that it has gotten to a point where he needs to let go. We need peace in this state.
“You don’t necessarily need to win all the fights; at times, you just let go for the sake of the good people of Rivers State and the love that you have always profess for the state. We need to secure the state.
“Fubara will leave tomorrow. Who knows who is going to come? It might be through him or through another person but we need to secure the state.”
