The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has inaugurated a 21-member ad-hoc committee to temporarily perform the legislative duties of the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly.
The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, was attended by lawmakers representing all six geo-political zones of the country.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Abbas emphasized the non-partisan nature of the committee’s mandate, urging members to prioritize governance and peace in the oil-rich state.
“This assignment is a call to duty. You are expected to legislate and provide oversight in a manner that ensures good governance, peace, and prosperity for Rivers State,” Abbas said. “You must not be partisan or biased in the execution of this mandate.”
The committee, which is chaired by the House Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, also includes Ali Isah (PDP, Gombe) as Deputy Chairman, alongside other prominent lawmakers such as Idris Wase (North Central), Aliyu Muktar (North East), Sada Soli (North West), Iduma Igariwey (South East), and Shehu Rijau.
Other members include Wole Oke, Akara Hi Amadi, Patrick Umoh, Isa Anka, among others. James Faleke, representing the South West, was absent due to unavoidable circumstances.
The committee’s formation follows President Bola Tinubu’s emergency proclamation regarding the Rivers State legislative crisis, necessitating federal legislative intervention.
