Eight members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday officially announced their defection from their respective political parties to the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to the Nation, during the House’s plenary session in Abuja, six lawmakers from Delta State dumped the PDP for the ruling APC, while two legislators from Enugu State left the Labour Party to pitch their tents with the PDP.
Leading the wave of defections was Hon. Nicholas Mutu (Bomadi), the longest-serving member of the House since 1999 and current leader of the southern caucus in the chamber.
Speaking on behalf of the Delta defectors, Mutu said the decision was driven by “unresolved internal crises” within the PDP and a “need to align with a platform that ensures better delivery of democratic dividends to our people.”
Other Delta lawmakers who joined the APC include Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi (Ndokwa/Nkwuani), Hon. Jonathan Okodiko (Isoko), Hon. Thomas Eriyetomi (Warri), Hon. Julius Pondi (Burutu), and Hon. Victor Nwokolo (Ika North and South).
From Enugu State, Hon. Mark Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) and Hon. Dennis Agbo (Igbo Eze North/Udenu) abandoned the Labour Party for the PDP, citing ongoing leadership struggles and ideological inconsistencies.
Obetta, while explaining his decision, said, “The Labour Party has lost direction and can no longer guarantee the mandate we promised our constituents. The PDP offers a more stable platform to actualize our legislative goals.”
The Speaker of the House read their defection letters aloud during plenary, marking another shift in the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defections come just days after the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and 21 other lawmakers also left the PDP for the APC.
