The House of Representatives is set to debate a bill that proposes holding all elections in Nigeria on the same day.
The bill, sponsored by Representative Francis Waive, aims to amend the Electoral Act and consolidate elections for the presidency, governorships, National Assembly, state legislatures, and local governments.
Proponents of the bill argue that consolidated elections will reduce costs, minimize the bandwagon effect, and enhance the credibility of the electoral process.
The bill also seeks to increase voter registration and reduce election-related litigation.
This development comes as the House resumes from its Sallah recess, with members expected to engage in a thorough debate on the bill’s merits.
The proposed legislation is part of a broader effort by the Reformers, a group of 35 lawmakers, to introduce sweeping reforms in governance, economy, security, justice, and social sectors.
Honourable Waive advocated the alteration of CAP. C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 of the Nigerian Constitution and for related matters, according to Nigerian Tribune.
Waive further seeks to alter Sections 76(1), 116(1), 132(1), 178(1) and Third Schedule Part 1 Sub-heading F Paragraph 15 of the Constitution (as amended).
