The House of Representatives has appealed to the United Kingdom government, to temper justice with mercy, while sentencing Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.
This step was taken, after a motion to save the Ekweremadus from their present predicament, was moved on the floor of the house, by a lawmaker from Enugu State, Toby Okechukwu.
According to Hon Okechukwu, while moving the motion, diplomatic intervention in this kind of case is normal.
“It is a common practice in international relations for nations, including the UK, to seek relief for their citizens involved in situations such as that of the Ekweremadus,” he said.
In his reaction, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, said intervention by the House is not a justification for the charges against the Ekweremadus.
However, he implored the UK government to consider Ekweremadu’s years of public service and consider him, in the judgement.
Therefore, the House determined to urge the UK government and the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing Ekweremadu, his wife and the doctor.
However, they also implored the Federal Government of Nigeria to take all diplomatic steps required to intervene in the matter.
