The Ekiti State Police Command has apprehended two individuals allegedly running an illegal university study centre in the state.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Eribo, revealed the development on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti while presenting updates on the activities of the State’s Criminal Investigations Department over the past three months.
According to him, the suspects, identified as Adesanmi Sunday and Akinola Olaolu, were recently arraigned for operating a fraudulent study centre purportedly affiliated with Kwara State University, Malete.
They are accused of issuing fake Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates to unsuspecting members of the public.
Eribo explained, “Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Department, on February 18, received credible intelligence that some syndicates are illegally and unlawfully operating the Kwara State University study centre in Ado-Ekiti, where several Bachelor and Master degrees were issued to unsuspecting members of the public.”
He added, “Two suspects were arrested, namely Adesanmi Sunday and Akinola Olaolu, in connection with the crime. They both conspired to defraud some students and issued fake certificates.
“The university authorities were consulted and they denied any connection with the centre and the operator. The suspects had been charged to court on 11th April 2025.”
Beyond the fake certificate syndicate, the police commissioner also reported that the CID had made arrests in 12 cases of rape, recovered stolen vehicles, and apprehended suspects linked to child abuse, murder, and armed robbery within the period under review.
He noted that while some of the suspects have already been arraigned, others will face prosecution upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
