The Ondo State Police Command has refuted claims circulating in the media that a vehicle belonging to the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl in Akure on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the report, originally published by Sahara Reporters on April 17, was described as unfounded and misleading.
“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false and misleading report published by Sahara Reporters on April 17.
“It alleged that the convoy of the first lady, Sen. Oluremi, was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure,” the statement read.
Further clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident, the statement revealed that both eyewitness testimony and preliminary findings from the investigation point to a hit-and-run driver operating a white Lexus vehicle without a registration number.
The statement detailed that a witness named Ayanlade, who saw the incident unfold, immediately gave chase to the fleeing vehicle using a motorcycle. The fatal crash reportedly occurred in the Oba-Ile area of Akure.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police was said to have visited the bereaved family personally, offering condolences and promising a thorough and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice.
“At no point was the first lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” the spokesperson reaffirmed.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu was in Ondo State at the time for the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where she also oversaw the distribution of 10,000 professional kits—including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives across the South-West zone.
