General Oladipupo Diya, the late former Chief of General Staff to the late Nigerian Military President, Gen. Sani Abacha, has been buried in his hometown Odogbolu, Ogun State.
Diya who was appointed chief of general staff to the late military dictator, Gen Abacha died on March 26, 2023.
Before he was appointed Abacha’s second-in-command, Diya was the chief of defence staff and military governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985.
Premium Politics reports that President Bola Tinubu described the late military leader as a selfless and diligent leader.
President Tinubu stated that Diya’s contributions to nation-building remained a reference point for the coming generations.
According to the president’s message which was delivered by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, during the burial on Saturday, Diya’s efforts towards curtailing several uprisings that threatened the corporate entity of Nigeria will be forever remembered.
“Gen. Diya’s efforts towards curtailing several uprisings that threatened the corporate entity of Nigeria are legendary and these will remain indelible in the consciousness of Nigerians and sub-Sahara Africans.
“Indeed his life of selflessness and diligence in the service of the military remains a reference point for coming generations of military officers.
“His leadership and tactical prowess greatly contributed to the success of this nation.
“He implemented various reforms in the army, including training programmes and welfare for soldiers and under his leadership, the Nigerian Army witnessed significant advancement and operational effectiveness,” Tinubu said.
Similarly, Bishop of Ijebu Southwest, Bishop of Ijebu, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Ogunbanwo in his Sermon, described Diya as a lover of God and God’s duties.
Among the dignitaries present at the event were the acting inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun; Ogun government officials, federal lawmakers, former military administrators and captains of industries.
