Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi congratulated Kenya president-elect, Williams Ruto, after the country’s apex court Monday upheld his victory in the election.
Ruto was declared the winner of the just concluded presidential election in the East African country.
He polled 50.49 per cent of the total votes cast (7,176,141) to defeat his closest rival, ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga who polled 48.85 per cent (6,942,930) of votes cast.
Mr Ruto also achieved the minimum 25 per cent of votes in 39 counties.
However, Mr Odinga rejected the results alleging irregularities and went to court as a result.
Four of the seven electoral commission members also refused to authenticate the result.
In its unanimous judgment, the apex court dismissed the petition by the opposition leader, Raila Odinga against Ruto’s electoral victory.
Reacting to the development, Peter Obi hailed the verdict upholding Ruto’s victory.
He also described the development as a double victory for Kenyans.
Obi via his official Twitter page also stated that Ruto’s supremacy court victory holds vital lessons of hope and courage to Nigerians.
“I congratulate Kenyan VP @WilliamsRuto on the Supreme Court verdict upholding his victory in the Presidential elections. He has achieved a great feat and victory, both at the polls and in the courts.
“By this verdict, it is a double victory in Kenya, for the national democracy and the integrity of the judiciary. The recent political events in Kenya that saw Ruto to victory, hold vital lessons of hope and courage to Nigerians.
“who are firmly focused on taking back their nation from the old order, for good. -PO” he tweeted.
