Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar emphasized the divine nature of power, asserting that it is bestowed by God Almighty and not by any human.
Atiku’s statement follows the controversy surrounding the outcome of the 98th National Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party held in Abuja. The meeting, which took place on Thursday, resulted in several intra-party resolutions, including the reconstitution of the party’s Disciplinary and Reconciliation Committees to ensure its stability.
The party appointed former Akwa-Ibom State governor, Emmanuel Udom, as the head of its Disciplinary Committee, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to lead its Reconciliation Committee.
Addressing his supporters in a WhatsApp group after the NEC meeting, Atiku responded to insinuations from some of his supporters that he had been betrayed by elements within the party. He reiterated that only God has the power to grant leadership, saying, “There is God. It is God that gives power, not anybody.”
In response to Atiku’s assertion, one of his supporters in the social media group said, “This is very true, Sir, and this same God will answer your heart desires and ours too. When the day comes, we shall all be alive to celebrate together as one big family of good faith. Victory shall be ours. It is well with you, Sir.”
Meanwhile, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party, Taofeek Arapaja, addressed calls for the suspension of former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, and other members of the defunct G5 governors within the PDP over alleged anti-party activities.
Arapaja stated in an interview with Saturday PUNCH that the PDP’s NEC meeting failed to comment on the alleged anti-party issues and retained the party’s former Vice Chairman (North), Umar Damagum, as the acting national chairman until the next NEC meeting.
Responding to the calls for suspension, the PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) clarified that it is not the duty of the NEC to suspend members. He explained that the party has internal mechanisms, such as the reconciliation and disciplinary committees, to handle such issues. He emphasized that those accusing members of anti-party activities should forward their complaints to the disciplinary committee for due process.
