A significant crack has emerged in the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, as prominent members from Ukwa-East and Ukwa-West Federal constituency have urged their representative in the House of Representatives, Chris Nkwonta, to defect to the All Progressive Congress immediately.
This decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Obehie, Ukwa West LGA, where members expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing crises within the PDP at the national level, according to Daily Post.
The party’s inability to conduct the Abia State PDP Congress has further exacerbated tensions.
A communiqué signed by 40 PDP leaders, including Don Ubani, John Ajuzieogu, and Goodhope Nwagbara, cited the party’s internal struggles and lack of progress as reasons for their decision.
They claim Nkwonta’s continued membership in the PDP harms his constituents.
The defecting members praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for ongoing projects in their area, facilitated by the Niger Delta Development Commission.
“We will align and holistically support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, the PDP stakeholders said.
They also commended Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for his quality representation.
The group vowed to align with and support President Tinubu’s administration, citing the need to belong to a unified and effective party.
Their defection is expected to strengthen the APC’s presence in Abia State.
Nkwonta, the only PDP House of Representatives member from Abia, has been mandated to join the APC. His decision will likely have significant implications for the political landscape in Abia State.
This development marks a significant shift in Abia State’s politics, as the PDP’s internal crises continue to weaken its stronghold.
