A Nigerian business mogul and an uncle to one of the African richest men, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, has described the moves by some members of the National Assembly, backing the adoption of the parliamentary system of government as the best thing to happen to Nigeria.
Dantata, made this known while speaking on Thursday while receiving a delegation of the 60 members of the House of Representatives who are seeking a return to the parliamentary system of government.
The business tycoon who was also a parliamentarian in the First Republic, said Nigeria would be great again if the system is adopted.
According to him, the presidential system of government currently practices in Nigeria is operating, unmanageable and costlier, hence the need for change.
“Things are not working, the country is stagnant and the citizens are not enjoying anything out of it so there should be serious moves to adopt the parliamentary system so that Nigeria would be great,” he said.
He however warned the legislators pushing for the adoption of the parliamentary system to be wary of personal interests.
Reacting, the leader of the delegation, Kingsley Chinda, noted that the presidential system that Nigeria is operating now is costlier and cumbersome, making it difficult to manage.
He said, “Even the Prime Minister would be chosen from the National Assembly and other governors and any attempt for them to go astray would be tackled easily by the members.”
Chinda also urged Nigerians, the media in particular, to support the move to adopt the presidential system of government in the country.
