The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security Matters, Fatai Owoseni, has said that those who attacked the state secretariat are “miscreants on cheap drugs”.
Owoseni, who has a distinguished career as a former commissioner of police, unequivocally made this statement during an interview on Channels Television on Monday.
The incident, which has sparked widespread concern, was further clarified by the Nigerian Army’s report. The military identified the attackers as Yoruba Nation agitators, a group known for their separatist inclinations.
According to the Army’s account, these individuals were not merely protesters but were “dressed in foreign military camouflage with berets and armed with dangerous weapons,” indicating a level of preparation and threat that goes beyond peaceful demonstration.
The situation escalated to a confrontation that led to the apprehension of nine individuals associated with the Yoruba Nation movement. The Army’s statement highlighted the recovery of a “Semi Automatic Pump Action rifle and ammunition,” underscoring the potential for violence that was present during the attack.
This incident comes against a backdrop of political tension in the region, where calls for autonomy and self-determination by groups like the Yoruba Nation have been met with governmental resistance.
