The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting cultural tourism as a vital means of expanding the state’s economy.
This commitment was made known by Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, during a press conference for the 2024 Yemoja Ibadan Festival.
The festival, scheduled to take place from October 10 to 27, 2024, aims to showcase, promote, and preserve the traditional heritage of the people. It will feature various activities, including offerings to Yemoja and other deities, performances, and visits to motherless babies’ homes, according to Independent.
Dr. Olatunbosun stated that the festival honours Yemoja, the deity symbolizing motherhood and fertility. It brings communities together to express gratitude and reverence for Yemoja’s significant roles in their lives.
The festival has received support from Governor Makinde, who declared August 20 as a work-free day for Isese adherents. Aare Omikunmi Egbelade, Aare Isese of Oyo State, praised the governor’s commitment to promoting culture and tradition.
Egbelade urged the state government to support the Yemoja Festival’s bid for UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage Festival. This recognition would enhance the festival’s global visibility and attract more tourists to the state.
The press conference was attended by notable figures, including the Chief Press Secretary/Special Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, and the General Manager, Council for Arts and Culture, Chief Mrs. Adeyinka Adedeji.
